Uglich is a small town on the banks of the Volga River. Two picture-perfect Orthodox churches make it a popular port of call for Russian river cruises.
Uglich was a favorite town of Ivan the Terrible in the 16th century, and the brilliant red Church of St. Dmitry on the Blood was built to honor the his young son who was killed in 1591. Our river cruise on the Grand Circle m/s Rossia stopped over in Uglich, and we did a walking tour, allowing plenty of time for shopping at the numerous vendors' stands between the town and the ship. I think most of us would have liked to stay longer in this pleasant village on the Volga River.
