In 1972, UNESCO adopted an international treaty to encourage the identification, protection, and preservation of cultural and natural heritage sites around the world.

Since then, 890 sites have been designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including 689 cultural sites, 176 natural sites, and 25 mixed site properties in 148 countries.

Cruise travelers are lucky, because many of these locations can be easily visited on shore excursions or as part of an extended cruise tour. The About.com Guides in our travel channel have some excellent information and photos of many of the UNESCO sites. How many have you visited?
