Celebrity Solstice Christening - Newest Celebrity Cruises' Ship Is Officially Named

Sunday November 16, 2008
The Celebrity Solstice christening launched a new class of Celebrity cruise ships on November 14.

The Celebrity Solstice had arrived from Europe the week before and has been "inspected" by members of the cruise industry and press since then. She will have her inaugural cruise on November 23.

About 1,000 cruise line executives and employees, travel agency representatives, and other VIPs attended the naming ceremony in the new ship's Solstice Theater. Marine biologist and cancer detection advocate Dr. Sharon Smith is the godmother of the Celebrity Solstice. Unlike many godmothers, she is not a "celebrity", but her life story certainly makes her an excellent choice. The christening featured a little of everything from rousing bag pipers to spinning aerialists, and the photos accompanying this article on the ceremony provide a good flavor of the exciting event.

I came away from this new class of Celebrity ship with numerous photos of the staterooms, dining venues, and public areas, which I will be posting to this site soon. I was only on the ship for about 40 hours, so it's impossible to evaluate the service, cuisine, shore excursions, etc. However, my initial impression is that the exceptional look of the ship will help solidify Celebrity's position as a premium cruise line. If the service and cuisine matches the decor and innovations on the ship, cruise travelers will love the Celebrity Solstice!
