Gray Whales of Magdalena Bay, Mexico from the American Safari Cruises' Safari Quest

Thursday May 1, 2008
We spent a memorable day with gray whales while on our Sea of Cortez cruise on the American Safari Cruises' Safari Quest.
Petting a Gray Whale in Magdalena Bay, Mexico
Our hearty group of 16 travelers boarded a bus early in the morning from the dock in Loreto. We had a beautiful drive across the mountains and the Baja Peninsula to Adolfo Lopez Mateos on Magdalena Bay of the Pacific Ocean. The lagoon at Magdalena Bay is a favorite birthing area for gray whales, and many make the journey to Mexico in the winter months.

We were in Mexico on the Safari Quest in late March, which is near the end of the whale watching season at Magdalena Bay. Even the "babies" were larger than our small boats! We were extremely lucky, because the babies were very inquisitive about our boats, and they kept coming up all around us, wanting to be petted and gently bumping the boats. These photos aptly demonstrate what an amazing day we had.
