Costa Cruises has ordered two new 114,2000-ton, 3,000-passenger, cruise ships to be delivered in 2011 and 2012. Isn't it great news for cruise lovers that our choices for new ships continues to expand? The new ships will be built by Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri at a cost of over 510 million euros each. They will be sister ships to the Costa Corcordia and Costa Serena currently sailing for Costa, and to the Costa Pacifica, which is also being built by Fincantieri.

Costa's two new ships on order will offer the same innovative elements featured on the other Concordia class ships including the 23,000 square-foot Samsara spa, which is one of the largest spas at sea, complete with exclusive cabins featuring direct access to the spa and a dedicated restaurant. The ships will also feature two swimming pools with retractable magrodomes, the central one equipped with a giant movie screen and authentic Grand Prix race car driving simulators.

Fincantieri's Italian shipyards have been very busy with the cruise ship boom of the past 20 years. Since 1990 Fincantieri has built 41 cruise ships. Today’s Costa order means that Fincantieri now has 18 vessels with construction in progress or about to start up at the shipyards of Monfalcone, Marghera, Sestri Ponente and Ancona. These 59 ships have brought the shipbuilding company revenues of over 25 billion dollars.

Costa currently has 12 ships, and with all the newbuilds, the fleet will grow to 17 in the next five years.
